How to improve the popularity of your blog?

So you have a blog! You have been diligently writing content for your blog, but how do you make it popular? Here are just a few tips to help you increase the popularity of your blog.

Good Layout

Ensure your blog has a good and clean layout. If you are using WordPress pick a template that is suitable for your blog content.

SEO Friendly

Optimize your blog so that search engines can find it. This can be a simple as providing good descriptive meta tags. Instead of having a blog title such as “Mike’s Blog” consider making you title more descriptive such as “Mike’s Java Programming Blog” if your blog is related to programming.

RSS/Atom Feeds

Many blogs already come with a feature to display feeds. Ensure that the feeds are working and being updated. Feeds can help your blog get more exposure! People can link to your feed or put it directly on their own website.

Longer Posts

Consider writing longer more thorough posts for your blog. Longer posts will make your content seem more valuable and original. Longer posts can also attract links from other websites and bloggers. As a rule of thumb keep your articles above 400 words and stick to the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when and why).

Spelling and Grammar

Make a habit of double checking spelling and grammar before you publish an article. Spelling and grammar errors could make your blog seem unprofessional. WordPress has a built-in spellchecker, use it!

Refresh Existing Posts

Although this can be tedious, improving old posts is a great way to improve the popularity of your blog.  Is what you wrote in you old posts still correct? If not, fix it! Consider expanding on the idea of the original post and adding new content.

The Webconfs SEO Toolset

Webconfs.com provides SEO tools, services, tutorials and articles. Webconfs has a simple design, is easy to browse and it is not cluttered with advertisements. One of the tools that we found particularly useful is the Keyword Density Cloud.  The Keyword Cloud is a visual depiction of keywords used on a website. Keywords having higher density are depicted in a larger fonts. The main keywords on your website will appear in larger fonts at the start of the cloud. The tool will also tell you how many times a keyword appears on your website and gives the density percentage as well.

The Website Keyword Suggestions tool is also useful. This tool determines the theme of your website and provides keyword suggestions along with keyword traffic estimates. Although this tool is similar to Google Keywords it uses Overture’s (now Yahoo Search Marketing) database.

Webconfs has many more SEO resources such as articles about how to Optimize a website for MSN Search and Optimizing for Yahoo Search.
